Manoa Coaches

Larry Oshiro

Head Coach Larry Oshiro started competitive swimming as a teenager at Palama Settlement and later swam at McKinley High School, under the legendary coach, Harry Mamizuka. After graduating from McKinley, Larry attended Shasta Jr. College in Redding, California and later the University of Oregon, where he continued swimming.

Larry started to coach swimming at Palama Settlement in 1966 and in 1972, joined McKinley High School staff as a swim coach, of which he is still active in. In 1979, when Harry Mamizuka formed Manoa Aquatics, Larry was asked to join the club.

Chris Ota

Coach Chris Ota started competitive swmming with Manoa in 1996. He began swimming under the present head coach Larry Oshiro. He swam for Roosevelt High School and competed in the Western Zone Championships in California and Arizona. After graduating in 2002, he earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts in 2005 and earned an Associates Degree in Interface Design in 2007. He currently works as a lifeguard at Manoa pool, as a wedding videographer and a full-time web designer. Coach Chris joined the Manoa Aquatics coaching staff in February 2005.

Kaysha Izumoto

Assistant Coach Kaysha Izumoto started swimming at the age of three. She first competed at district swim meets for Manoa in 1998 before joining Manoa Aquatics in 2000. She swam under both Coach Larry and Coach Chris during her six years at Manoa Aquatics. In High School she competed for Pac-5 and lettered in swimming all four years for Hawaii Baptist Academy. Kaysha was a member of Pac-5 waterpolo team and a member of HBA's volleyball and cross-county teams. After three years at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas she transferred to Hawaii Pacific University to pursue a career in Nursing. Coach Kaysha joined Manoa Aquatics coaching staff in June 2009.

Denny Higa

Assistant Coach Denny Higa is a graduate of Castle High School, in Kaneohe, and competed in cross country and track. He continued running and bicycling activities while earning a degree in Communications from UH Manoa. Following graduation Coach Denny worked in parts and service for a new car dealer for 14 years. Finding a greater love and interest for swimming and water activities, Denny is currently employed as a full time lifeguard at Manoa Pool. Coach Denny continues to bicycle and walk while not in the water. His accomplishments include the Honolulu Marathon, Ultra Marathon, Run to the Sun – Haleakala, and the Century Bike Rides. Coach Denny is married to Claire, and has two children Mason and Miyo. Coach Denny joined Manoa Aquatics coaching staff in June 2009.
